you can’t lose what you don’t have

It might get covered up or blocked by layers and layers…. and layers of oppression, discrimination, misinformation and injustice… but you cannot lose what you don’t have. Anything external can be taken from us or ‘lost’ if we wanna keep in theme for the blog title.

Whether that be land, a job, a role within whānau/family/at work/in the community, material things etc. anything we have also has the potential to not be had by us… … .. ….. to not be ours anymore lol far out let’s go walk this awesome grammar off (in your minds, get ready, that’s us).

So anything we have can be lost and you can’t lose what you don’t have, that’s what I’m trying to get at. Sweet? We’re building on last week’s post about having a vision to guide us through the darkness when sight becomes redundant and unreliable. “the light will always come and we can see it in our minds long before its physical form lights up the end of the tunnel…”

But when we think about light in that way, it’s an external thing that can be lost, especially when we’re going through it and life’s answering all those requests for growth all at once. And that can be found again when we breakthrough and overcome. But what if,

this isn’t something we have, but something we are. that naturally and innately flows out into what we do.

I shared another post earlier in the week about how stars don’t create light but are created from it. I read this in a book and at first it had me lol I didn’t get it. So reread it a few times, chucked some whakapapa (genealogy) in the mix and all of a sudden it was clear. Some indigenous science for ya below,

Stars don’t create light but are created from it?!! the light comes first and stars are an expression of that light?!?!! So, light isn’t something stars have, but something they are that naturally and innately flows out into what they do — shine and radiate light. If you’re not super pumped at this revelation right now, maybe the next line will do it for ya.

Since we have pretty much the same whakapapa (ancestry) as stars and whakapapa (science) informs us that light precedes stars, aaaaaand Pākehā science is pulling thru to let us know the top elements our tinana (bodies) are made of are found in stars….. we can interpret that to mean that we are the expressions of light on the earth, as stars are in the skies.

On our journey through life, we never lose the light (whatever that means to you), because we can’t lose what we don’t have. It’s what we are. We may forget, we may lose sight of it with the different expressions of pollution and clouds that blur the view. But it’s always there, it’s who we are.

It’s up to us to remember, to dive deeper into getting to know ourselves and getting to know our whakapapa (the genealogy, the science, the mātauranga lol all of it is whakapapa), ‘we need to know more and we need more people to know it’ a line by pāpā Bruce Pascoe, our whanaunga from Australia. This is the work. Reconnecting to self through whakapapa.

Be light, be you. Tēnā tātou,

Hana.
